In 2007, DCI's GIS Youth Corps received a grant from the Skillman Foundation to map neighborhood conditions in the designated "Osborn Community", a part of Skillman's Good Neighborhoods Initiative. GIS stands for Geographical Information Systems. We create professional maps of our neighborhoods and specific target areas within Detroit. Utilizing hand held computers, digital cameras and global positioning devices, local teens identify neighborhood conditions.

In collaboration with Wayne State University, our 2004 youth leaders, (go to MEDIA link to see report) mapped the locations of abandoned cars, dangerous housing, and other barriers to public safety. Possible build sites for infill housing or new retail are also recorded. Information is shared with Law Enforcement, Local Developers, and residents in a joint effort to improve neighborhood conditions.

Beginning March 2008, we have launched Phase II of our Retro Neighborhood Initiative " Community Engagement Through Physical Change". It is designed to create positive physical improvement to the community while attracting new resident activism.
